Cleaning Skylights
Cleaning Skylights
Skylights are difficult to clean unless the skylight is easlily accessed.
Professional window cleaning and squeegee kit, long or extendable handle, bucket, (window cleaning bucket rectangular in shape if possible) sudsy ammonnia, or mild soap,(such as dish soap) clean cotton rags.
Use a professional window washing applicator and squeegee on an extendable pole or broom handle so you can reach the interior of the skylight. Use a mixture of a few drops of dish soap per gallon of water. Dip the washer/applicator into the solution; wring out excess (window cleaning bucket is best so the washing attachment has an even application of water). Apply to window or skylight using pressure and wipe the entire window. Remove washer from pole and attach the window squeegee; squeegee off water from window with firm, even strokes in one direction, being careful to overlap your previous stroke as you go to avoid streaks. Wipe the rubber on squeegee with a rag in between strokes. Use the same techniques for the outside of the skylight or climb onto the roof. Again use the hand held washer and squeegee. Wrap a cotton cloth around the squeegee and wipe to soak up any missed water and to clean the skylight edges. Plexiglass skylights are prone to scratches so only use a washer/squeegee combination or a soft cloth to prevent scratches. When doing the inside of the Skylight be aware of the mess that will be made from the water and soap and take steps to protect the surrounding area.
